Testimonies of Healing

Christian Science was first...

From the April 1923 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Christian Science was first brought to my notice in the year 1912, while a probationer nurse in a hospital. For some time I was very antagonistic towards what I thought Christian Science to be, until I heard of a friend's healing of a so-called incurable disease. Shortly after becoming interested, I contracted diphtheria and was in bed seven weeks, being then sent home broken down in health. Among other ailments I had was a weak heart, also a tendency to consumption which in a few months' time seemed to be developing rapidly. But with my own reading of the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, and absent treatment from the friend who had introduced Christian Science to me, that trouble was entirely overcome in about two months.

I was very grateful for the understanding of God I had gained through the teaching of Christian Science while my husband was in Malta and France. The consciousness of God's ever-presence and protection was the greatest comfort, and the only thing worth having; and all fear for his safety was overcome. I have ever since been grateful for that experience.

I should like to mention one demonstration which was to me a beautiful proof of God's ever present help. My little son, when about sixteen months old, fell, face downwards, from the top of the stairs to the bottom (about a dozen steps). When I picked him up, he was moaning with pain, and his little face looked terribly injured. At first I was very fearful; but I sat down and opened the Bible to these words in Isaiah: "Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness." The realization of Love's ever-presence brought such wonderful peace and comfort that the healing was almost instantaneous. Although at first one half of his face was bruised and very swollen, the next morning it was quite normal, excepting for a small yellow bruise on his forehead.
