When I was led to seek help in Christian Science, I was suffering from what the two doctors who examined me for the army had diagnosed as heart trouble. I had been under treatment with one of them for a few months; and while I appreciated his honest efforts to help me, he could not offer me positive hope of recovery. He could only say that I must seriously limit my activities, and that I might possibly outgrow the trouble. However, I seemed to grow worse, and finally reached the point where it seemed impossible for me to continue my work. I was just over twenty-one years of age at that time, and had recently been offered a better position, with greater opportunities for development. Under the circumstances I could not even discuss it. I had always been burdened more or less with doubt, fear, and discouragement, and at this time my mental state was such that I often wondered if it would not be better for me to die.
A business friend advised me several times to try Christian Science, and later I went to a Christian Science practitioner. In about two weeks the offer of the new position came again; and my health had so improved that I accepted it at once, with the provision that I be allowed two weeks' vacation. My mental state gradually improved, till I became conscious of a greater sense of health and freedom than I had ever known before.
I found that Christian Science was the truth I had been seeking for years. One thing that impressed me strongly was the fact that, although in all the churches I had previously attended they emphasized the great importance of being a Christian, it was not until I took up the study of Christian Science that I learned what it really meant to be a Christian. Through the study and application of the truth as revealed in the Bible and the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, I have received many blessings. Now I know what Christ Jesus meant when he said, "Ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free." I am grateful to have learned that heaven is a divine state of consciousness to be gained here, as well as hereafter, by right thinking. In Christian Science we attain the fulfillment of Christ Jesus' promise, "Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest."
