Testimonies of Healing

Christian Science has meant so...

From the May 1923 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Christian Science has meant so much to me during the past eight years that I should like to express my gratitude and appreciation for all that it has done for me.

During the so-called influenza epidemic of 1918 this trouble attacked me. For about two weeks I clung steadfastly to the truth, as taught in Christian Science. At the end of that time, though seemingly not well, I was very anxious to attend a Christian Science service. All the churches where I was then living were closed by the state, so I went to New York city, a distance of twenty-five miles, to attend a Wednesday evening testimony meeting and a Christian Science lecture the following evening. From that time I felt no further effects of the illness, except that on account of very weak sight I had to wear glasses. This condition, however, was entirely overcome in about a year, as my understanding of divine Principle became clearer; and I have had no need for glasses since then. This healing was accomplished through my own work.

Recently I had another proof of the healing power of Christian Science, which has lifted me higher in consciousness and brought me nearer to God. While I was helping to erect a heavy crane, a part weighing about seven hundred pounds tipped over, striking me across the body and pinning me to the floor in a helpless condition. The men around me sent for a doctor, who took me to the nearest hospital. In the meantime Science help was requested and treatment begun. When I entered the hospital it was impossible for the doctors to diagnose the trouble. I could neither breathe nor eat without intense pain. My healing was very remarkable, as from the human standpoint there seemed to be no hope, on account of the pain being so intense. The doctors tried to relieve me by hypodermic injections; but these had no effect. However, the healing work was going on; and inside of four days I realized that it was done. One night the chest seemed to lift forward about an inch and a half, and the muscles of the body relaxed. I was able to get up a few days after that, and was discharged from the hospital within two weeks. Throughout the time I was in the hospital the following words from the fifth chapter of James were with me constantly: "The prayer of faith shall save the sick, and the Lord shall raise him up." These words were an ever present help and comfort.
