Christian Science was brought...

From the June 1924 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Christian Science was brought to my notice about the middle of 1910 by a dear friend in Canada, who wrote telling me of the help it had been to her, and very earnestly advising me to look into it. At this time I had never heard anything except adverse criticisms regarding it, and in my ignorance had a good-natured contempt toward it, rather than antagonism. I did not feel in need of physical healing; for, although I had worn heavy glasses for many years, suffered much from a rupture, which necessitated wearing a truss, and was troubled with varicose veins and a long-standing bowel complaint, I had had these difficulties so long, and had become so used to them, that I never expected or looked for any relief or healing.

Still I did act on my friend's advice, and decided to look into Christian Science, not with any desire to accept it, but really with the thought of being able to belittle it and show my friend how foolish I thought her for having taken it up. I therefore borrowed a copy of the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, and read it for some months. I then returned the book, but found that I could not do without it. I had an irresistible longing to know more about the subject, and eventually bought a copy and settled down to earnest study. The result of that study has brought about such a change in my life that to-day I feel words are altogether inadequate to express the deep gratitude I have to God, and to the author of our textbook, for the beautiful teaching that has brought to me healing of both body and mind.

Fourteen months after I started my study I found that the rupture of seventeen years' standing was completely healed; and during the year following, varicose veins and the bowel complaint also disappeared. In 1914 my eyesight was completely restored, and I was enabled to do away with glasses, to the wearing of which I had been subject for twenty-six years; and to the present day there has not been any sign of a recurrence of any of these difficulties. I should like to add that since then I have overcome many faults of temperament, and have also been healed of several minor ailments; and while I feel, and do here express, deep gratitude for these wonderful healings, I feel an inexpressible sense of gratefulness for the mental and spiritual uplift that has been mine since I first began in a small measure to understand the great truth that is revealed through the study of Christian Science.
