Testimonies of Healing

For many years I lived what is...

From the June 1924 issue of The Christian Science Journal

For many years I lived what is called a worldly life. I was fond of social drinking, was an inveterate smoker, and was obsessed with a mania for gambling. As the years passed, I became subject to frequent and severe headaches and colds, suffered much from an internal disorder, and, generally speaking, gave evidence of very poor health.

The foregoing pictures my condition and the life I was leading twelve years ago, at which time I was given some Christian Science literature by friends who had been healed and wonderfully blessed through the ministry of Christian Science. At this time I had no thought of seeking or receiving physical or moral healing. However, the reading of this literature aroused a desire for more enlightenment upon the subject; and this led to the purchase of a copy each of the Journal and Sentinel. The reading of these led in turn to the purchase of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, and a Bible, as I had some years before discarded my Bible as of no real interest. With the purchase of the two last-named books began my real quest for an understanding of God and His idea, man. As this understanding unfolded, I was lifted up and out of all desire for the social drink and for gambling. I was healed of the tendency to have either headaches or colds. In a moment of great gratitude for other blessings received through Christian Science, I was instantaneously healed of all desire for smoking, after twenty years of bondage to the habit. Some three years ago I was healed of an internal disorder of many years' standing, which had caused me much distress and suffering. I was most wonderfully lifted above the sense of sorrow and loneliness upon the passing of a loved one.

These and many other healings of physical disorders and of sin, which I have experienced through the study and application of Christian Science, have largely been the outcome of my own efforts to make practical use of Christian Science. They have meant much to me, for they have served to attest the power of the Christ, Truth, to heal and to save. They have been the natural result of the realization of "God with us."
