Throughout the ages God has revealed Himself to mankind whenever there has arisen some one spiritually-minded enough to manifest somewhat of His true nature. Christian Science teaches that God is divine Mind, which is ever present, and that God's creation is composed of spiritual ideas, forever manifesting and revealing His own nature. These ideas constitute the spiritual creation, of which the material sense of creation is but the counterfeit. The fact is, therefore, that man, as the son of God or as God's idea, is forever manifesting God's own nature. As mortals we do not express God's nature; but throughout the world's history there have arisen men and women who were sufficiently spiritually-minded to give up somewhat of the false or mortal sense; and as they did this, man's true selfhood, revealing God's own nature, began to appear. Such individuals were called prophets, seers, or revelators. They were all God's messengers, presenting God's ideas, which forever reflect God's nature, each in its own individual way.
During the lifetime of the earlier messengers of God, many turned away from the false or mortal sense of things, understanding something of God's true nature; but, almost invariably, when the particular messenger or revelator had gone, mankind returned again to its materialistic ways of thinking and living. With ever increasing certainty, however, the world has been gaining a clearer and clearer sense of God and of man in His image and likeness; and thus God's revelation of His true nature through His messengers has been becoming more and more definite.
Christian Science teaches that God is complete Being; that He therefore includes both cause and effect; also, that He is both Father and Mother. He therefore forever includes His creation in Himself. Mrs. Eddy speaks of God as divine Principle, Life, Truth, and Love. She also writes in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (pp. 568, 569): "This rule clearly interprets God as divine Principle,—as Life, represented by the Father; as Truth, represented by the Son; as Love, represented by the Mother."
