THUS JESUS TAUGHT

From the September 1924 issue of The Christian Science Journal

The sun sinks low behind the hills;
The evening calm lies sweet
About the humble, eager group
That sits at Jesus' feet.

Forgotten are their homely tasks,
Their nets lie idly by;
Quiet their hands; their hearts drink in
The Master's message high.

They walk with him in heavenly ways,
From mortal thought apart;
The Christ is lifted up for them—
Rejoice, ye pure in heart.

The fishing-boat a temple is
Of holiest ministry:
Ask what ye will; it shall be done
If ye abide in me.

Take no thought, therefore, for your life;
Your Father knows your need;
But seek the kingdom of your God,
And His commandments heed.

He heals their wounds by Truth and Love;
Preaches humility;
And all the lessons of that hour
Live still, for you and me.

And when with earnest, longing hearts
We humbly seek our God,
We find His kingdom, here and now,—
The path that Jesus trod.

A glorious path through Calvary,
All human ways above;
A way both simple and sublime—
The path of unselfed love.
