In December, 1905, while serving in the United States army at the Presidio of San Francisco, California, I was attacked by what doctors term renal colic, or gravel in the right kidney. I suffered from this so-called disease for four years and a half before I heard of Christian Science. At the time I learned of Christian Science I was taking large capsules of morphine constantly to allay the pain; and in addition to this, two physicians were attending me. One of them told me that my case was practically hopeless; that very few in my condition ever recovered. Then I decided to try Christian Science.
I went to a Christian Science practitioner and had a treatment; then went home and took the old drugs again, not having faith in Christian Science. Needless to say, I grew worse. In a couple of weeks I decided to try another treatment in Science. While passing through the hall of the building in which the practitioner was located, I noticed the name of an old-time friend on the door, followed by the letters "C.S." I decided to step in and see whether it was the same person I knew. Much to my surprise, I found it was. This person had learned of this wonderful truth, had been healed of many erroneous physical beliefs, and was now a practitioner.
This practitioner lovingly treated me. I took the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, home with me. Upon arriving home I poured all the medicine out of the bottles, threw the bottles away, and began to read Science and Health. In less than two hours I was absolutely healed. Great was my joy! All pain had ceased. That was in June, 1909. I have never had a trace of the supposed disease in that kidney since.
