Nineteen years ago I was taken with a nervous complaint which grew worse from year to year. I was in such a feeble condition that it seemed likely I should pass on. Medical assistance was of no avail. About ten years ago a dear relative called my attention to Christian Science. Without knowing what it was, I turned to it for help; and my condition soon improved. I also read some articles in the Christian Science periodicals, but could neither understand nor apply the teaching. The improvement lasted about a year; then my condition became so serious that I often wished I were dead. In the fall of 1921, after the birth of a child, I became melancholy. To this was added the false belief that melancholia was inherited; for my brother and my sister had had this complaint. I had reached the state where every evening I was afraid I should not recognize my family the next morning; and after some time I did not know my little daughter. I was so filled with fear that I could no longer pray or be glad. In short, my affliction had become unbearable suffering.
After I had remained in this condition for several months, at my husband's request I was taken to an institution for persons suffering from neurosis, but without effect; so my husband took me home again. During this time the thought sometimes came to me that Christian Science would still heal me; and I at last asked a dear practitioner for help, which was lovingly given. After suffering for nearly nine months with this trouble, I was healed in two treatments, and I was filled with an inexpressible feeling of joy, praise, and gratitude to God. From that hour I could do all my work. Then I bought the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, and learned to understand what Jesus meant when he said, "The kingdom of God is within you;" for I recognized that the kingdom of God is within us and that "angels are pure thoughts from God" (Science and Health, p. 298).
Other lesser complaints have been overcome in our family through the help of a practitioner. Some time ago I noticed an inharmonious condition on my finger. I at once declared the truth that in Love's spiritual kingdom, where all is inspired by Love, such a condition could not exist; and I was able to dispel this difficulty completely. I was overjoyed and at the same time astonished, for this was the first proof of the correctness of my own work. I had continuously suffered from this complaint, and now it had disappeared in such a short time.
