Words cannot express my gratitude for what the teachings of Christian Science have done for me. My first healing was that of my eyes. I suffered intensely and almost continually with headaches. The physicians told me these headaches were caused by the eyes. They said they were very badly affected and that I needed glasses. From that time on, for six or seven years, I wore glasses, but did not know a well day. I had to have the lenses changed very often, as the eyes seemed to be getting worse all the time. As the work I was doing necessitated my using the eyes continually, and much of the time by artificial light, my glasses did not seem to help. I was very much discouraged, and kept going to one oculist after another, but received no help, and was without hope of any relief.
One morning, shortly after this, I seemed to be very sick and was not able to be up; so a doctor was called. He said the breakdown was caused by the eyes. He left medicine to be taken every hour; and said to let him know how I was that evening. I did not take any of the medicine, and felt reluctant to send him word that evening because I had no faith in medicine and was thoroughly discouraged with everything; I had come to the point where I did not know which way to turn for help. On the following morning I was much worse. When the lady from whom I rented my room brought me something to eat, her husband, who was a student of Christian Science, came in with her and said to me, "If you try Christian Science it will heal you." As I was in much pain I did not even answer him kindly. The next morning he came in with his wife again and said the very same words to me. This time I inquired what it would cost for Christian Science treatment; and upon being told I said, "I will try it."
As there was no practitioner then in our little town, a telegram was sent to an adjoining city asking for help for me. That night I rested easier, and the next morning when the practitioner called, over long distance telephone, I was able to answer the telephone myself. Before I had finished talking with her I realized I was healed; and I have never worn glasses or used medicine of any kind since. At first I did not know it was Truth that had healed me, but I was left with a sense of peace and love such as I had never experienced before; and so I wanted to know what it was. That day I was shown how to study the Lesson-Sermon; and I am grateful to say that from that time on (this was over twentyfive years ago) I have used Christian Science for every problem which has been presented. When at times I have been unable to work out my own problems I have asked for help, which has always been lovingly given me.
