MANY people entertain a very erroneous concept as to what humility is. Nevertheless, it is a quality which should be desired, sought after, and attained by all. Humility is not servility; it does not grovel. Those who would acquire goodly qualities cannot advance far Christianward without humility. One may possess many good qualities; but if he does not express humbleness of heart, he cannot be an altogether lovely character. And if he does not desire or seek humility, he is not sincere, and will make but little real progress in acquiring true goodness. All genuine seekers of righteousness —of spiritual good—must possess humility. Lord Lytton writes:—
O be very sure
That no man will learn anything at all,
Unless he first will learn humility.
Another definition of humility is "freedom from pride and arrogance." An individual is not capable of gaining true knowledge, the qualities of good, while in bondage to such erroneous beliefs.
