Nearly five years ago I first came into touch with Christian Science through seeing my mother healed through its ministrations of what was considered an incurable disease; also, a dear friend, who had been very unhappy, became suddenly full of hope and joy. I could not help but admit that there was some extraordinary power in Christian Science.
At that time I was very discontented, seeking happiness where happiness was not to be found, and surrounded by lack, limitations, worry, and anxiety. In the brief space of three years of married life I had consulted at various times no fewer than five doctors; yet it was not considered that we had any more than the average amount of sickness. Our little son, who was then about eighteen months old, was a source of constant worry; and shortly after I heard of Christian Science he became ill, and unable to digest his food. For about two months I went through a very trying time. My faith in doctors had been shaken; yet I was afraid to trust in Christian Science, and all the efforts to persuade me to try it only made me oppose it more violently. Finally the child became so ill that I decided to send for the doctor. He prescribed medicine, and told me I must give him nothing but milk during the summer months. A few days later the child was worse than before, and not only so, but he was crying for food. I telephoned to the doctor and was told to go on with the same treatment, which I did; but still there was no improvement. Then in desperation I determined to wait no longer. So one Friday afternoon, without saying a word to any one, I went to see a Christian Science practitioner. She was so kind and encouraging,—so different from what I had expected,—that I left her office with a great sense of joy, feeling as though a weight had been lifted from my shoulders; and from that afternoon my child was healed.
Since then Christian Science has been my only physician. I cannot find words adequate to express the gratitude that I feel to Mrs. Eddy for giving Christian Science to the world. Through its teachings the Bible has become a revelation to me. I have learned to love it as I never did before. We have experienced many beautiful healings in our home. Fevers, grippe, headaches, and other ills, as well as injuries due to accidents, have been overcome; and a sprained ankle was healed in two days. Many of these healings have been instantaneous; others slow, but none the less sure.
