Freedom — out of the darkness and bondage of fear into God's glorious sunlight! This has been my experience, just as it has been the experience of countless numbers of Christian Scientists.
All my early life I was a sufferer from inflammatory rheumatism, fainting spells, and frequent attacks of tonsillitis. I remember, as a very little child, that my grandfather, who was a physician, would insist upon my getting out of bed in the morning, no matter how difficult it seemed. When I was old enough to understand, he explained to me that had it not been for this very thing I would have been crippled.
When Christian Science came into our home, it was to help a loved one. Through reading "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy to him, I found that I was being sustained in my work as I had never been before. Finally, the opportunity came to try its healing efficacy for myself. Early in the spring of 1901, I had an unusually severe attack of rheumatism. I suffered intense pain constantly for three months, and would walk the floor day and night, with the tears streaming down my face, saying "the scientific statement of being," as given by Mrs. Eddy on page 468 of Science and Health, and everything else that I knew from that book and the Bible. Every day during this period a practitioner came to the house, but there was no apparent relief from the suffering. I knew, however, that Christian Science was my only hope, and that if it did not heal me there was no help possible. Finally the help came, and for the first time in my life I began to gain in strength and weight. In a short time the healing was complete, and I gradually discovered that the fainting spells and attacks of tonsillitis had also disappeared. It is twenty-two years since this healing was accomplished. Since then Science and Health has been my daily companion, and God my only physician, and I have never used a material remedy, or even been tempted to.
