When I turned to Christian Science, it was not so much for the physical healing, although I very much needed it, as it was to know and to understand God. I had attended Christian Science services for a year, and was much impressed with the happiness I saw in the faces of those attending. A little later I saw a great change take place, both mentally and physically, in a friend who had been healed through Christian Science; and because of this I commenced to read "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, which proved indeed to be a "key" to the Scriptures.
I had been brought up by very religious parents, but rebelled at the teachings of a God who punished His children. I therefore rejected them, finally putting my Bible in the bottom of a trunk, where it remained unread for about twenty years. After reading Science and Health through the first time, I found that all the questions which had puzzled me from my childhood had been answered. I learned that God is the divine Principle, Love. God as Principle, as the "great First Cause," had been my concept for years, but I had not understood it. As I read and studied, I learned how to apply this truth to every thought and to purify my thinking. As this change began to take place in my consciousness, I soon experienced physical healing. At that time I was very much emaciated from stomach and liver trouble, a chronic condition of constipation, and extreme nervousness. I soon found I could eat what I wanted, with no ill effects. The bowels became normal, and I began to gain in weight.
I had worn glasses for more than twenty years, and had been under the care of noted specialists in Boston, Denver, and St. Louis, who had told me that I could not expect my eyes to be healed, and that I could not use them for more then twenty minutes at a time without suffering. After five months' study of Christian Science my eyes were perfectly healed; and within a year I can conscientiously state that I was perfectly well, although it was longer before I manifested my usual weight. This naturally resulted from a right understanding of God, which has enabled me in the years that have followed to help many others.
