When first I caught a glimpse of the truth contained in that divine message, "Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest," I was in a hospital. I had had five operations at different times previous to this, and apparently almost every ill that "flesh is heir to." I had reached the point where all hope of health, harmony, and happiness seemed futile. I had prayed for the end, for I was weary and heavy-laden with grief, disappointment, and suffering. Every form of healing I had heard of I had tried, but nothing brought lasting relief. Friends had betrayed, human relations had failed, and it seemed as if all mental and physical strength had left me.
Then an old friend brought me a copy of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. I began to read it, but not with any thought of being healed. I did not really want to be healed; and I should not have read it if I had had any faith in its healing me. I opened the book on page 266, and I shall never forget the joy this reading brought that day. I knew an understanding heart had written that book, and that some one else had lived experiences similar to mine. It seemed as if every line had been written just for me—the first comfort I had found in years. I had searched for it in people, places, and books, but found little that was satisfying. The courage to live that I immediately received is inexpressible. In a few weeks I was on my feet, and it seemed like a dream that I could ever have felt the way I had previously—as though I was just awakened, there was so much here that I had never seen before. My experience taught me that whatever is wrong with humanity, and whatever is wrong in the universe, the understanding of God will correct.
My healings have been many. Quinsy from which I had suffered since childhood, stomach trouble, rheumatism, neuritis, weak eyes, intestinal and other internal disorders have been healed. I am grateful to be freed from bondage to the ills of the flesh, but my deepest gratitude is for the spiritual uplift that the understanding of God brings. I owe an immeasurable debt of gratitude to the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, Mary Baker Eddy, for Christian Science has brought me health, holiness (wholeness), and happiness.
