Testimonies of Healing

In February, 1914, a dear friend,...

From the December 1926 issue of The Christian Science Journal

In February, 1914, a dear friend, who belonged to the same church and taught in the same Sunday school as I, was healed through Christian Science of constipation of sixteen years' standing. This made a deep impression on me, though I had been taught by so-called orthodox parents to have nothing to do with anything that came from Mrs. Eddy.

Every summer for ten years I had suffered greatly from asthma, and every winter, almost from childhood, had been troubled with quinsy and tonsillitis. I had used many known remedies, but to no avail. I thought that if my friend could be healed by the Christ I could find the same Christ in our own beloved church. With healing in view I went to my pastor and asked for help. Many prayers were uttered in my behalf; but in spite of them all I grew steadily worse, till one day in September of the same year, while I was walking the floor struggling for breath and praying for help, this verse came to me, "Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits." This was my answer: If God says "try the spirits," I will try Christian Science! That night I obtained my husband's consent to go to the same practitioner who had helped my friend; with the result of an exceedingly great awakening to the power of God, as revealed by Christian Science. Not many months after this I had a severe case of tonsillitis and quinsy. I again asked for help in Christian Science, and was so completely healed that this difficulty has never recurred.

The Psalmist was surely right when he said, "O taste and see that the Lord is good." To be able to take a verse of the Bible and prove it true is a wonderful thing to me. Every statement of Truth in that Holy Book can be proved just as definitely as can any rule of mathematics. I believe every Christian has certain portions of the Bible which stand out more definitely for him than other portions, because he has proved for himself these particular parts. Among my glorious proved verses are the following: "Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake. Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heaven: for so persecuted they the prophets which were before you;" and also, "When my father and my mother forsake me, then the Lord will take me up."
