Testimonies of Healing

Nearly ten years ago, after I had...

From the December 1926 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Nearly ten years ago, after I had been under medical treatment for twenty-five years, physicians pronounced my case incurable and said that I had but a year to live. My parents were orthodox Jews, though I never gave any attention to this teaching, and thus seemed to be without hope of any kind to inspire any expectation of release. My troubles were diagnosed as asthma, tuberculosis, and stomach trouble. For years I had been unable to lie down to sleep, and had had a slight hemorrhage of the lungs. My stomach seemed so weak that I could not eat the most simple foods without distress. At different times for several years one and then another of my friends and acquaintances recommended Christian Science, but it did not mean much to me then, and I still suffered on. In the fall of 1916 it was again brought to my attention, and being in terrible need, I made an appointment to see a practitioner that evening. To my surprise and joy I was greatly benefited by the first treatment and rested normally that night; I was also able to eat without distress following, and presently the cough faded into its own nothingness.

Some weeks later, on reaching my place of business early one morning, I seemed to collapse while seated at my desk. An employee telephoned to five physicians for me in his excitement. When they did not put in an appearance after he had waited a reasonable length of time, remembering that I had been having Christian Science help, he called a practitioner, informing her that I appeared to be dead. She came to me promptly, finding, however, that a medical doctor had preceded her by a few minutes. I was still seemingly unconscious, but presently opened my eyes; and within two hours I was quite restored, feeling very well, and I remained, carrying on my business.

There were no material restoratives given, though the doctor declared I was a very sick man and would be for some time. The next day being Thanksgiving, I attended church and gave a testimony of gratitude for release from bondage. Words are inadequate to express my appreciation for the blessings that have been mine since the advent of Christian Science into my consciousness. I am daily striving to live as counseled by our Way-shower, and in our age again by our revered Leader, Mary Baker Eddy. I surely feel like exclaiming with the Psalmist, "Who is so great a God as our God?"—
