Testimonies of Healing

When I first heard that, in Christian Science...

From the December 1926 issue of The Christian Science Journal

When I first heard that, in Christian Science, healing was being done as in Jesus' time, I wanted to look into the subject. While I thought I did not require physical healing, I had always felt sorry for those who did not enjoy such health as I did. For this reason I had taken up nursing and massage, and was very happy in my work. The fact of this healing as in Jesus' time, however, made me think we were not doing as God meant us to do in these matters. As I read the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, it seemed an entirely new language to me. I got sleepy every time I tried to read, so adopted the system of darning while doing so. and thus tried to understand. It was not until I made my first demonstration that I felt really happy, as for a time everything had seemed topsyturvy. Previously I felt I had had many answers to prayer and had been successful and happy in my work as nurse and masseuse. I now see that I had always tried to hold the thought of life and love, and believed that with God all things were possible.

My first healing took place on an occasion when I had gone to help my parents to move. I awoke in the night with an affected throat, a trouble to which I had always been subject. My first thought was that I would now be a hindrance and not a help. Remembering, however, that I had brought the Christian Science textbook with me, I began to read the chapter on Prayer. On page 14 I paused where it says, "Become conscious for a single moment that Life and intelligence are purely spiritual,—neither in nor of matter,— and the body will then utter no complaints." Pondering these words I fell asleep—and awoke well. During the thirteen years which have since elapsed I have never had that throat difficulty, and when I hear the words just quoted read from the desk in church or elsewhere, the joy of that first healing returns afresh.

I knew then that I had found the truth; and I have since proved daily that Christian Science, when properly applied, meets our every need. I have had other proofs of healing. Lumbago has been overcome at once; neuritis was a long time in yielding, but I am grateful for the many lessons learned during the time between its appearance and overcoming; warts have disappeared from both hands. The greatest blessing and joy of all, however, has been in learning how to think properly and, in so doing, how to help others as well as myself. For this I can never express sufficient gratitude.—
