ONE of the great truths of Christian Science, which is learned by the student early in his experience, is that spiritual harmony is real, and that the inharmonious, the discordant, must therefore be unreal. Mrs. Eddy has stated it thus in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 276): "Harmony in man is as real and immortal as in music. Discord is unreal and mortal."
To demonstrate this truth, however, in human experience sometimes appears to be a weighty problem. The question may arise, Why is so much discord apparent in my life when I have accepted Christian Science and am endeavoring to the best of my ability to obey its teachings? A careful study of the exact meaning of the term "harmony," and an analogy drawn between harmony in being and harmony in music, may reveal the root of the difficulty, and show the necessity for practical, demonstrable understanding, rather than theoretical belief.
Material sense testimony concerning harmony is not true, any more than it is regarding any other status of being. A mortal may believe himself and his surroundings to be harmonious if his material conditions are felicitous. But in Christian Science we learn the transitory nature of materiality, and find that true harmony is not dependent in any way upon the material, but has its origin and foundation in God, divine Principle. Then what is harmony?
