Christian Science came to my knowledge several years ago through the healing of a friend in the last stages of Bright's disease. It was not the need of healing that attracted me, although I have had many blessings in that line; it was the beautiful thought that the Christ lives to-day as in Jesus' time. I used to wonder as a child why the wonderful things done in Jesus' time were not done to-day.
My first demonstration will never cease to be wonderful to me. I was in the mountains, where the thermometer registered forty degrees below zero. I went on the street to do some shopping before starting on an all day trip by sleigh, and my feet were badly frozen. The driver had sheepskin shoes to put on over my shoes, and guaranteed them to warm up my feet in fifteen minutes. He was right; my feet soon began to tingle, then to ache. I could not sit still, I was in so much pain. Then all at once the thought came to me that the Christian Science God is the God of love. All I knew was what I had been told; I had never read anything about Christian Science, and did not know what a treatment was. But I thought, If God is Love, He is of course good; then if He is good, He cannot create evil; if He does not create evil, it is not right that I should suffer such agony. And while I argued mentally, the suffering disappeared. As a proof that the healing was perfect and complete, I got up the next morning and dressed my feet without a thought of the experience of the day before.
I have had so many proofs of God's allness that I never could tell half of them. Christian Science has healed me of tonsillitis. I had suffered from this since early childhood, two or three times every winter, being confined to my bed from ten days to two weeks each time. Chronic sick headaches, from which I had suffered as far back as I can remember, and bronchitis that grew worse as the years went by have vanished, healed in Christian Science. These healings all came about through my understanding of divine Principle. In the severest cases I have had the help of a practitioner. Christian Science has also healed me of chronic constipation, burns, sprains, and, with the help of a practitioner, of ptomaine poisoning. In our family of six small grandchildren, not one has ever tasted medicine; and all sorts of childish diseases, hurts, and accidents have been overcome in Christian Science.
