REASONING ACCORDING TO DIVINE RULES

From the September 1926 issue of The Christian Science Journal

"Unwillingness to learn all things rightly, binds Christendom with chains," writes Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, on page 96 of our textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures." From this it is reasonable to assume that when Christendom is willing to learn all things rightly, its chains will be broken, its freedom established. This is in agreement with Jesus' statement, "Ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free."

Logic has been defined as "the art of reasoning, to the end that truth may be discerned from falsity." In the light of this definition, Christian Science is preeminently logical, as it not only gives the knowledge of the true nature of God,—Life, Truth, and Love,—but unfolds the art of using this knowledge in detecting the spurious nature of error, whether in the realm of so-called material science or false theology, and in eliminating its influence upon our consciousness and hence upon our lives. The knowledge that God is the only creator, and that His creation is perfect, has been before the world ever since the first chapter of Genesis was written. But the art of using this knowledge was not plainly defined until the advent of Christian Science only a little over half a century ago. Since then great numbers of men and women in all walks of life have proved beyond a doubt that, as our Leader has stated (Science And Health, p. 494), "Reason, rightly directed, serves to correct the errors of corporeal sense."

The art of reasoning according to divine rules is therefore sustained by the truth. These rules are interpreted in Christian Science as laws of divine Mind, and are given in our textbook in such simple language that a child can understand them. They show clearly what we should admit into consciousness as the truth, and what we should reject as falsity or error. They are not oppressive or burdensome; and it is possible for us to conform to them here and now. They will never be forced upon the world, and we cannot force them even upon our dearest friend; but they are as the open door for all, and there will never be any other way to arrive at absolute Truth and to enter the Father's kingdom.
