ABSOLUTE CHRISTIAN SCIENCE

From the September 1926 issue of The Christian Science Journal

On page 274 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" Mrs. Eddy writes, "Divine Science is absolute, and permits no half-way position in learning its Principle and rule—establishing it by demonstration." And it is because Christian Science is absolute that it is reliable—always reliable.

Let us consider the question, to ascertain the correctness of the statement just quoted. Mrs. Eddy had always been a devout student of the Bible. From her earliest years she had been spiritually-minded and had turned naturally to God for guidance in prayer and through His revealed Word. After experiencing a healing from a serious illness through the revelation of the ever present Christ, Truth, which suddenly came to her on reading the second verse of the ninth chapter of Matthew's Gospel, she was convinced that there must be a Science of divine healing applicable to all manner of disease and sin. She was, moreover, convinced that this Science lay hidden in the Bible, and especially in the New Testament, and that Christ Jesus had used it in his practice of healing. She then began the search which ended in the discovery of Christian Science.

Now the foundation of Christian Science is the truth propounded by the Hebrew prophets and taught by Christ Jesus, namely, that there is one God. Moses in his great address to the children of Israel, as given in Deuteronomy, used these words: "Unto thee it was shewed, that thou mightest know that the Lord he is God; there is none else beside him;" Isaiah wrote in God's name, "I am the Lord, and there is none else, there is no God beside me;" and Jesus voiced the same truth when he gave "the first and great commandment" to the lawyer who tempted him: "Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind." There can be no doubt as to the fact that the basis of both the Judaic and the Christian religion is monotheism, the doctrine of the one God.
