I desire to express my deep gratitude for the blessings which I have received from Christian Science. About four years ago I was in a lamentable physical and mental condition, all the more unhappy because I did not believe in anything. At this time I had been suffering intensely for five years from a distressing difficulty. I could neither stand nor stoop; sometimes, when I walked, the pain was so severe that I was riveted to the spot. My physician had tried to relieve me, but in vain; the difficulty always returned with greater intensity. Declaring himself at the end of his resources, the doctor said that an operation must be tried, but that at best it would relieve me for only a few months, as the trouble was incurable.
I had just experienced great sorrow, and I was tired of living when a friend spoke to me of Christian Science. I bought the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, and went to see a practitioner, who gave me good advice. I understood I had a great deal to learn, and a good many false beliefs to overcome. The next year, following a chill, I was critically ill. My friend telephoned to a practitioner, who came immediately, and the healing was instantaneous. I spoke to her of this trouble which was causing me to suffer continually, and told her that already I had had treatment in Christian Science. She assured me that this work was not lost, but that I had only to correct much wrong thinking. I can say that my spiritual education began from that day, thanks to the kindness and consecration of the dear practitioner, who never grew tired of replying to all my questions.
