Testimonies of Healing

It would be difficult indeed to tell...

From the September 1926 issue of The Christian Science Journal

It would be difficult indeed to tell all that the study of Christian Science and the understanding of the Bible gained thereby have meant, and after more than twelve years continue to mean, to me. There have been many instances of healing and correction of discordant conditions. In truth, it cannot well be conceived just how human life could be lived without this understanding of the ever-presence and omnipotence of our Father-Mother God.

Many years ago, before I knew anything of Christian Science, a major surgical operation was performed for hernia, and the condition, according to the belief of the surgeon and others, fully and permanently corrected thereby. But within a few months after this apparent benefit, through a misstep, the condition reappeared, and the surgeon, greatly grieved at the undoing of what had seemed such perfect work, ordered the wearing of a truss, saying that I should never move about on my feet without it. This was worn at least three years. During this time the blessings of Christian Science had become in some measure understood. It seemed to become necessary to appeal to a practitioner for help for other discords, and the use of the support was fully explained to her. When asked if it should be laid aside at that time, her reassuring reply was: "One could not ask a lame man to give up his crutch before he knew he no longer had need of it. When you learn that the support is not necessary to your well-being, you will dispense with it."

A few months later the realization came that the truss was no longer necessary. At that time the external manifestation was fully as evident to sense as it had ever been. The support has never since been used, and no discomfort or ill effects have been experienced. For a time mortal mind would try occasionally to unsettle the harmony of consciousness in regard to this false belief, but at such times a prompt declaration of the completeness of God's work instantly silenced this error. The healing of this hernia took place about ten years ago, and for many years absolutely no sense-evidence of any kind in regard to it has appeared. This is only one of the many incontrovertible proofs that have been received of the power and willingness of divine Mind to heal.
