The first healing which came to...

From the September 1926 issue of The Christian Science Journal

The first healing which came to me, after becoming interested in Christian Science, was the healing of my eyes. I had worn glasses from the time I was about twelve or thirteen years of age, and it was said by an oculist that I should always have to wear them. From the time I was four or five years old I had been afflicted with sties almost constantly. I remember hearing my mother tell of my having three on one eye and one on the other at one time. These conditions were both quickly and completely healed through the loving work of a Christian Science practitioner.

The next physical healing which stands out in my experience was that of tonsillitis. When I awoke one morning I was in a miserable condition, — a very sore throat, fever, and generally aching body. At this time I was the only member of our family of four who was at all interested in Christian Science, and it meant much to me to have my mother, upon entering the room and finding me in the condition she did, give me the privilege of choosing my own kind of treatment. Therefore at my request she got in touch with a Christian Science practitioner. There seemed to be no change during the day. My family all went out in the evening, and I managed to get to the telephone myself and talk with the practitioner. After she had lovingly given me some truths about God and His perfect man, she told me to get "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy and read. With a desire to be obedient I did so, although with some difficulty. I read until I fell asleep; and when I awakened, possibly an hour later, I was free. All the above-mentioned symptoms had disappeared; and when my family came home later in the evening, I was up and dressed. This was a helpful and convincing proof, not only to me, but to the other members of the household.

The experience we had at the birth of our daughter occupies in my thought a very helpfully prominent place. Although we had employed a physician and nurse to be present with us at that time, I was continually entertaining a thought of not wanting their assistance. I, however, began to realize that something seemed to be obstructing; and about this time my husband came and gently and lovingly told me that I must love them. I said, "Oh, I do want to love them! " Also at this time the practitioner was called and told of the mental state. Our Leader tells us in "Miscellaneous Writings" (p. 355), "Error found out is two-thirds destroyed, and the last third pierces itself." This did indeed prove true, for the mental state of unlovingly shutting them out was entirely reversed, and in a very short time our baby girl had arrived. The physician said to me, some time later, that to him it was wonderful, and that he had told no less than a dozen medical men about it. I was grateful that this experience was not only a convincing proof to me, but also a proof of Christian Science to this medical practitioner, who had lovingly come to assist us.
