In 1926 my small boy in running along a highly polished corridor tripped and fell, twisting his leg, spraining his ankle, badly tearing the ligaments, and turning over his foot so that it hung helpless. His knee was very much drawn up. This happened late at night, and we were abroad at the time. His sisters and I at once commenced working in Christian Science. There was one other Christian Scientist in our party, and she also kindly and effectively helped us next day. I was then able to write and wire home to London to a practitioner for treatment, and through Christian Science treatment alone, without any material aid whatever, all these conditions were finally healed and the boy returned to school on the appointed day. He later wrote saying that he was playing football as usual, and that he felt he could run faster than he had before.
At one time I suddenly commenced to have a bad stinging pain in my right arm, then in my back, left foot and leg; and it finally settled in my right hip and leg, so that I was hardly able to sit down or rise up. I was so stiff, and the pain was so great, I asked for help from a practitioner and a treatment was kindly given. At the same time I was told it would be much better for me if I remained at home and faced this condition for myself. I went away filled with self-pity, and consequently with pain and suffering, and could do no work for myself for about two days. Then one morning after pulling myself up, thinking I would have to get a member of the family to help me out of bed, I reached for our textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, and had read a few lines when a voice most distinctly spoke in my consciousness saying, If Christian Science is true, you need not be like this. I knew I did not need to be, so proceeded to get out of bed, with the greatest difficulty, and dress myself, enduring much pain, but knowing that I was being healed. Towards afternoon the discordant conditions all began to fade away, and next morning I was quite free.
During the years that we have known of Christian Science it has been our help daily, and the children and I have had many healings, from measles, whooping cough, enlarged tonsils, skin eruption, influenza, neuralgia, rheumatism, one shoulder growing higher than the other and becoming rigid, strained back, corns or warts on the sole of a foot, with roots so deep it was suggested they would have to be cut out, tonsillitis, torn finger; and much fear has also been steadily overcome. It has been unfolded how and where to educate our children, so that hitherto they have always kept in touch with Christian Science. It has overcome monetary difficulties, and through it a house was found when it seemed difficult. We were all almost instantly healed of intense sorrow. I am very grateful to all who have helped us, and always feel grateful to the one who, when studying Science to help another, sent a copy of the Christian Science Sentinel to me. When I opened it and read there about God, I knew it was true and that I could never get away from that concept of Him. I can only dimly appreciate what our Leader, Mrs. Eddy, must have gone through to establish Christian Science, her work was so great; but I am so grateful to her for showing us the Science of the healing truths of Christ Jesus' ministry.
