About five years ago I was well and able to attend daily to my business. I was living at that time, as I thought, a good Christian life, when I suddenly was laid low with paralysis. I was unconscious for a week, and half conscious for another week. Several doctors were consulted, including a heart specialist. I was confined to my bed for eight months, and twice the doctors pronounced the case hopeless.
My good wife and I never ceased our prayers and the reading of the Bible. We both had enjoyed reading religious books, and had tried to live up to their teachings. At this time I received a letter from an old friend, a student of religious subjects, advising me to dispense with the doctors, to throw out all medicine, and to read the ninety-first, and one hundred and twenty-first, and the one hundred and forty-third psalms, and trust entirely in God. I followed his advice, and in six weeks was out of bed. I was grateful for my partial recovery, although I was still having three or four fainting spells a day.
It was at this point that my wife and I felt a great desire to attend a church. We had looked into many religions, but were troubled by many beliefs which we could not accept. We decided to visit the Christian Science church. At the first Sunday service, in a much enfeebled state I asked an usher, who directed me to a seat, to allow me to remain in the rear, as I was subject to fainting spells. He lovingly told me not to think about the condition. I had no fainting spell during that impressive service, and have had none in the three years or more that have since elapsed.
