IN proportion as Christian Scientists grasp and demonstrate the teachings of Christian Science, they find themselves escaping from servitude to sickness, sin, limitation, and learning to be governed only by the commands of God, good. They are therefore watchful in protecting themselves from intruding suggestions of error. As Paul points out, "we ourselves also were sometimes foolish, disobedient, deceived, serving divers lusts and pleasures, living in malice and envy, hateful, and hating one another." This describes the unreal servitude to materiality from which one is liberated through obedience to the spirit and letter of Christian Science.
Obedience to the divine will empowers every mortal to overcome sickness, sadness, sin; leads him to rely wholly on spiritual means for the healing of sickness, and to gain liberation from discord by reflecting the divine nature. The worst servitude is servitude to selfishness which, in mortal estimation, masquerades as freedom.
"Choose you this day whom ye will serve." Christian Science enables one to distinguish unerringly between truth and falsity, and to follow the course which is discerned as one's present highest apprehension of divine Principle. Christian Science further requires of one prompt obedience. How much needless discord one would be saved if in moments of indecision, which indicate a mistaken belief in the absence of intelligence, one turned unreservedly and in full trust to divine Mind's wise and trenchant counsel, and followed it unquestioningly! As one perseveres in this Christian habit of consulting and obeying divine Mind, God, before making even the smallest decision, there will in due course be nothing left in human consciousness to which error could address or attach itself. There can be no question but that Christ Jesus maintained this attitude towards his heavenly Father.
