Testimonies of Healing

"For the word of God is quick, and...

From the September 1929 issue of The Christian Science Journal

"For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword." In Christian Science we are taught to prove what we know. I know the above statement to be true, as I have had occasion to prove it. While I was emptying a can of pure concentrated lye into a barrel of water, a piece of the lye was thrown into my eye. Immediately, fear suggested that it might manifest itself in a permanently injured eye, but close on the heels of this lie came "the word of God." Within a second or two the thought came to me, "Accidents are unknown to God, or immortal Mind" (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, by Mary Baker Eddy, p. 424) . I then repeated "the scientific statement of being" (ibid., p. 468). At the first instant a terrible sense of burning commenced, but by the time I had repeated half "the scientific statement of being" the burning ceased. The eye began to water freely, and the entire piece of lye dissolved and ran out. I did nothing more than hold a handkerchief to it for a short time. I continued declaring the truth, and then proceeded with the work at hand. At the noon hour, which came shortly, I washed the eye with clear cool water, and thereafter suffered no more than a slight irritation such as that experienced after a cinder has been removed. That afternoon I drove a car forty-five miles over a country road, and that evening read considerably. The next morning there was no indication whatsoever that anything unusual had occurred.

A few days previous to this time, while in a city a short distance from my home, I was awakened in the night by a severe aching in my shoulder. I declared the truth and soon the aching eased and I went to sleep. This happened several times during the night. After I awoke in the morning the aching became quite severe, so much so that I had difficulty in composing myself long enough to read the Lesson-Sermon. By persisting, and then doing my mental work, the aching eased somewhat. Several times that day the error returned for short periods, but by night it had been entirely routed and has not returned.

A little over a year ago I had one of the most delightful experiences of my life when I was a guest at The Christian Science Benevolent Association sanatorium in Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts. The utmost love and kindness were manifested by everyone, both guests and attendants. While there I was healed of heart trouble of a few years' standing. The spiritual insight gained cannot be measured.
