Testimonies of Healing

In June, 1922, I became the possessor...

From the September 1929 issue of The Christian Science Journal

In June, 1922, I became the possessor of a copy of the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy. With a heart full to overflowing with gratitude to God for leading me to Christian Science, I write this testimony to the regenerating power of Truth. We read on page 117 of the textbook, "Truth is a revelation;" and it is so indeed to each one who accepts it.

I did not take up the study of Christian Science for healing, but because of a sense of lack in the teaching of the church of which I was a member. All through the Bible I saw the demand for perfection; and my standard seemed to fall so far short. How could this be otherwise when we were trying to make a sick or sinning mortal perfect? However, I was in need of healing, for I had spent three years in seeking help from surgery, one operation seeming only to call for another, instead of bringing relief. I had practiced osteopathy for thirteen years, so was not a believer in drugs; but I was in fearful bondage to beliefs concerning the nervous and circulatory systems. While studying osteopathy I would often think, and during the years of my practice have many times voiced to my patients, the question that, if God made this body of ours, why did it get out of order so easily?

Finally, overwork seemed to bring about a physical breakdown and the necessity for an operation. Spiritually I had wandered far from the Father's home. The second year of ill health found the prodigal turning from the husks; and at the final operation in the third year, the last conscious thought was a prayer yielding all to God's care. This was answered, as I realized after coming to the truth. I was left in a semi-invalid state of weakness from the experiences of these years, and my mental state was one of total discouragement. I could no longer practice my profession, and felt of no use in the world.
