It is now over seven years since I became interested in Christian Science. At that time I was in a very bad condition. I had had a stroke of paralysis, and three of the leading physicians of Columbus told my daughters that I could not possibly live longer than six months. I had been taking treatment daily for six weeks, but my physician told one of my daughters he would not treat me any more, as I was too far gone for it to do any good. I was unable to take two steps without staggering.
At that time my son was in Minnesota, and this daughter wrote to him saying if he wanted to see me while I would yet know him he must come home at once. He wrote back saying it was impossible for him to come at that time, but that he would send his wife (whom we had not yet seen, and who had been healed in Christian Science) to take care of me. I had to go to the doctor for another treatment and asked if she would go with me. She said, "Yes, mother, but did you ever think of taking up Christian Science? Are you willing to try?" I said, "Oh, yes, I am, if you think it will do any good." "Then we will go to a Christian Science practitioner instead of to a doctor," she said. However, we could not get in touch with one that day, but made an appointment for the next morning at eleven o'clock. When I went into her office the practitioner met me lovingly, and began to explain to me the truth as taught in Christian Science. Then she gave me silent treatment. I went home and slept all night like a child, something I had not done for over a year.
The practitioner asked me to come every day that week. The second day the elevator was under repair and I almost crawled up two flights of stairs to her office, and during that treatment I felt the awful misery leave my head. At the end of a week I could walk as straight and steady as anyone, and I do the same to-day. I now do my own housework, washing and all, and a great deal for others.
