INSPIRATION AND ITS FRUITS

From the May 1930 issue of The Christian Science Journal

HUMANITY preeminently needs inspiration whereby to raise its motives, gladden its daily pursuits, fructify its efforts, and afford it protection from all evil. A dictionary defines the word "inspiration" as " informed, influenced, or directed by the Holy Spirit." Spiritual inspiration takes the drudgery out of daily tasks, and makes human life bearable, yea, truly blessed. One might liken inspiration to the taut sail giving buoyancy to the rowboat, the spreading wing of the skylark, songfully rising above the clouds.

With its golden shafts of spiritual revelation, Christian Science has pierced the mental darkness of ignorance and fear. Its teachings rebuke pantheism, idolatry, fear of the flesh, and lead one to the worship of God as Spirit and to the demonstration of real manhood in divine Mind. One who is thus informed, influenced, and inspired by the Holy Spirit gains a new view of himself as God's child, one which is entirely incompatible with sin, suffering, or failure. In the book of Job it is written, "But there is a spirit in man: and the inspiration of the Almighty giveth them understanding." This is God's message in all ages, and its adoption transforms human life. Spiritual inspiration replaces the flagging, sagging, lagging tendencies of the so-called carnal mind with joyful energy and the certitude that one is on the road to salvation here and now. So inspiration saves one from spiritless endeavor.

Not a little child starting off to school but is made happier by the daily inspiration of Christian Science. Why? Because as a student of Christian Science the child has the desire to prove that it can successfully reflect the intelligence of divine Mind during study hours; that it can express justice, mercy, and kindness in playtime, quietly drawing shy children into the happy play circle. And on its return home, loving inspiration points out to the watchful child the little tasks which, unasked, it can do for others!
