During the twelve years I have been a student of Christian Science various healings have been experienced, two of which I desire to relate, as they may help someone else.
For some few years after I became interested in Christian Science, a student of Mrs. Eddy's writings, and a regular church attendant, I experienced a sense of indifference to and disinclination to read The Christian Science Monitor. The healing of this negative mental condition came about in what I consider to be a wholly spiritual manner; that is, by means of a divine idea. One evening while I was repeating the Lord's Prayer, when I reached the line, "Give us this day our daily bread," this question suddenly presented itself to my thought: What about The Christian Science Monitor? I paused to ponder what seemed to be an irrelevant question. But the answer came in these words: The Christian Science Monitor is a portion of the Christian Scientist's daily bread. With the advent into consciousness of this divine idea, or true thought, the sense of indifference to the Monitor vanished, and in place thereof was an active desire to partake of this portion of "our daily bread." This awakened thought found practical expression in annual subscription to this clean and constructive newspaper, which I now read with a growing sense of appreciation.
The second experience was the healing of a poisoned ankle. For a day or two I had been aware of a feeling of irritation in one ankle, but had not given much heed to what seemed a trivial matter. However, on Friday evening of the week in which the incident occurred, the ankle was in such a swollen and painful condition that treatment was asked for from a Christian Science practitioner. On Saturday morning I found it extremely painful to stand, and a sense of fear suggested that it would be well to stay away from business. That fear was cast out by the truth underlying these words from "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy (p. 385):"Whatever it is your duty to do, you can do without harm to yourself."I accordingly went to business as usual, though with considerable difficulty. During the morning the practitioner gave me treatment, with the result that by evening the swelling and pain were much reduced. On Sunday morning the ankle was normal in size, and the pain had entirely gone. I went to the branch church of which I am a member, and took up my duty as an usher. This healing was a practical proof of the Scriptural declaration that "the word of God is quick, and powerful."
