LAW

From the October 1931 issue of The Christian Science Journal

THE presidents and princes at the court of Darius induced their king to sign a decree consigning to the den of lions anyone who should ask a petition of "any God or man" save the king, and to confirm it "according to the law of the Medes and Persians, which altereth not." This decree, together with the death penalty to be meted out to whoever should refuse to worship a human monarch, was proved void in the case of Daniel. He did not accept it through fear, resignation, superstition, or respect for authority. Through being true to his God and rejecting this human verdict, he gained exemption from it.

The average Christian to-day might be surprised if it were pointed out to him that he was not a worshiper of the one God. Yet, should he be regarding the physical body as the arbiter of his health, strength, activity, and life he would, in these respects, be turning his back on Spirit and bowing down to so-called laws of materiality. In his thoughts and actions he would be allowing materialism to supersede spirituality. Christ Jesus, the Founder of Christianity, advocated the opposite attitude.

Christian Science brings enlightenment and ensuing freedom to those who, for one reason or another, have surrendered themselves to the human decrees of sickness, sorrow, poverty, and are in need of healing, comfort, and reassurance. To them it imparts the correct concept of God and His laws; it lifts them above fear, and removes the consequences of a mistaken sense of law.
