Testimonies of Healing

Christian Science came into my...

From the April 1931 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Christian Science came into my life with its regenerating and healing power when I most needed it. Though I possessed a copy of the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, I merely glanced through it and left it in the bookcase while I lived in Victoria, British Columbia, for seven years. While there I was advised by a beneficiary of its teaching to look into the subject on my return. While in Paris, in 1914, copies of the Christian Science Sentinel were given me by friends; but it was not until the following year, while in London, that I found myself receptive to the truth.

I accompanied some friends to an evening service, and the textbook was lent me, and next morning I started to read, beginning at the Preface. The first sentence was like a clarion call to my dormant consciousness and I wakened to the simple grandeur of the truths expressed in the chapter on Prayer; so, closing the precious book for a moment, I asked God for a blessing on my reading, that I might have a listening ear and an understanding heart to know its message for me. The answer was one of healing. Three days later I discovered that I was free from indigestion, and that the pellets I constantly used were untouched. In amazement at such deliverance from suffering, I asked my daughter what I should do about it. She replied, "Why, simply go on with your study of the textbook and care for no one's opinion." Encouraged by this proof of God's infinite love and care, on a cold winter's morning I discarded a warm wrapping I wore on an injured knee joint. I have had no further trouble with the knee. On returning home I was faced with the trial of bereavement. A few years later, when attacked suddenly by some internal disorder, I asked my son if he wished me to have a doctor, or if God was to be my only physician. To my relief he replied, "God, mother!" I am deeply grateful that at these testing times my dear children were the channels of God's angel-messages to me.

I have enjoyed the unspeakable benefit of class instruction, and am a member of a branch church and of The First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston, Massachusetts. I had a most inspiring visit in Boston, where I met many kind friends, eager to help me along the rugged road. Words can never express my indebtedness to our dear Leader's unselfed love. She indeed demonstrated in her life these words of the beloved disciple: "Let us not love in word, neither in tongue; but in deed and in truth," thus "making our words golden rays in the sunlight of our deeds" (Christian Healing, p. 19); and she has given us in her Message to The Mother Church for 1901 (p. 34) the wise counsel to "follow your Leader only so far as she follows Christ."—
