Christian Science came into my home when I was quite a small child. My mother was healed of a tumor when, according to medical advisers, nothing was left her but an operation. As the outcome of the operation was uncertain, she decided to try Christian Science. At the time we were visiting an aunt who had experienced a very wonderful healing. I was too small to know exactly what happened, but I did know that my mother was restored to health, and I was given no more medicine.
As I grew older I attended the Christian Science Sunday School, and a practitioner was always called when inharmony threatened. Even though I did little to help myself at times, protection was always there. I did not thoroughly understand that God was able to prevent disaster as well as to heal the effects of it. The ridicule of playmates, who had heard at home criticism and remarks against Christian Science, served as an opening for resentment and sensitiveness, the effects of which it has taken long to overcome. Croup, measles, smallpox, grippe, inflammatory rheumatism, hives, and many other diseases were overcome, some very quickly.
After graduating from a teachers' college in a year when there were many more young, inexperienced teachers than there were positions, I was left without a position; and the whole family seemed to be in a most unsettled state at the same time. Although I was very restless, I felt that somewhere there must be a place for me, even though I could not see it then. As I look back now on many experiences I can see plainly where protection was always present, although no specific work was done. In the spring my family made a move to a larger city, and more harmonious adjustments were made. I held an office position until the next fall.
