Law is causation in operation. Everything that really exists is governed by law. Studying the heavens on a starry night must convince one that the Psalmist had glimpsed this truth when he sang, "When I consider thy heavens, the work of thy fingers, the moon and the stars, which thou hast ordained; what is man, that thou art mindful of him? and the son of man, that thou visitest him?" The one spiritual creation, as revealed in Christian Science, is the expression of God, the infinite cause.
But one may ask, What has that to do with working out the problems that confront us every day in the form of sin, sickness, poverty, unhappiness, or even death? Much is heard nowadays of the laws of health, economics, and physics. These, however, are not real laws, because they are based on materiality and are subject to change as mortal mind changes its beliefs and theories. Moreover, true law never changes; and so-called mortal mind can make no definite or true laws to govern mankind because it is not a real cause. Take, for example, the so-called law of contagion. If it had a real cause it would have an unchangeable effect, for an effect must be like its cause. When this so-called law is reversed by the understanding of true law, it is rendered null and void, and is powerless to operate in the experience of one thus enlightened. In other words, when it is seen as having no valid cause, it loses the semblance of operation and can have not even a seeming effect. In like manner, all so-called laws of disease or sickness are seen to be spurious, and whatever their name or nature, they may be rendered void by knowing their unreality. Real law can operate only in expressing the power of good. It is not really material law, but belief in material so-called law, supposed to have power to act evilly, which seems to produce untoward effects.
When we see the unreality of such so-called material laws, they do not touch us. As there is only one fact about two times two, namely, that it is four, and while there may be any number of false beliefs as to two times two, all of which are untrue, so there may be many so-called laws supposedly governing business, health, and all mundane affairs; but they are not true laws, and should be dealt with as false beliefs. The prophet Isaiah declares, "The Lord is our lawgiver," and James says, "There is one lawgiver," even God, and His laws alone are to be honored and obeyed. Every testimony of healing recorded in the Christian Science periodicals or given at the Wednesday evening testimony meetings proves that there is no real law supporting disease.
