GOD, OUR SAFETY

From the August 1933 issue of The Christian Science Journal

WHAT men require above all else is an understanding of God and His creation; for then they will know that man is ever governed by perfect spiritual law and therefore perfectly protected, perfectly safe. It is the province of Christian Science to give this understanding. Through its teaching we learn of the nature of the creator and of His creation, man, and of the relationship existing between them; and thus is established within us the assurance of God's continual love and guardianship.

What does Christian Science teach of God? It declares Him to be Mind, Love, Life— infinite Mind, infinite Love, infinite Life. And since God is Mind, His creation must consist of ideas. Man is thus the spiritual idea of God, reflecting all the qualities of God, perfect Mind. Thus, also, the real man is conscious of Life, but not of Life's supposititious opposite; conscious of Love, but not of Love's supposititious opposite. In other words, the real man has no knowledge of that which men call evil or death. And to be conscious only of Life and Love is to be perfectly safe.

God is Love. How feeble sometimes seems our appreciation of this great truth! We can think readily of a human father's protecting care and of a human mother's tender love, but even these speak faintly of the infinite love and care of God, the Father-Mother of all, for His creation. Being infinite, God's love is extended impartially to His entire creation; not a single idea but shares it. Individual man cannot possibly be deprived of the love of God, which flows like a river from its eternal source. It is his everlastingly because of his unity with Mind, because of his indissoluble at-one-ment with God.
