WHEN SPIRITUAL SENSE WARNS

From the August 1933 issue of The Christian Science Journal

IMMORTAL man, the man whom God creates and sustains, is never in danger because he dwells in the realm of eternal reality, where God reigns and where only good is found. Consequently, immortal man needs no warnings of any kind. He, the real spiritual man, abides consciously and forever in his eternal home which is heaven, and there are no dangers in heaven.

Quite different is the situation with human beings. They have their experiences largely in the realm of unreality, in the suppositional realm where evils and dangers of all sorts seem to abound. Consequently, human beings are constantly having to thwart or overcome or avoid dangers. It is true that these dangers are always fictitious. In final analysis they are utterly destitute of reality and power. Moreover, this fact can be demonstrated, provided one possesses spiritual understanding in sufficient degree.

Christ Jesus was not endangered by the storm which terrified his disciples on the Sea of Galilee, and he rebuked them for their lack of faith in God. Then, out of the depths of his profound spiritual understanding, he uttered a single command and the storm ceased. Daniel proved that he could spend a night with perfect safety in the lions' den. He could make this demonstration because he understood the power of the one infinite God, who is Love, and because he had in his heart only good will towards everyone and everything. The three Hebrew captives whom Nebuchadnezzar ordered to be thrown into the burning, fiery furnace were unharmed by that experience. Their exalted spiritualized state of consciousness rendered null and void the suppositional destructiveness of the flames.
