Testimonies of Healing

I first became interested in...

From the June 1934 issue of The Christian Science Journal

I first became interested in Christian Science through the benefits which I saw come to my wife through its application. I read Science and Health and was much impressed but I was not quite ready to turn to this Science for healing. I knew that if I did so, it would be in no halfway measure, as I thought I should have to change my life too much. One day after I had suffered from a cold, of which I had been unable to rid myself through the usual material remedies, my wife asked me why I did not try Christian Science, and said that if I wished it she would call a practitioner for me. I consented and it seemed to me that immediately on her calling I felt relieved —in fact, I knew I was healed. The proof of the healing efficacy of Christian Science came to me so clearly at that time that I have never had any thought of using other means for healing since then. Through that first proof I have been helped in every way through the study and application of Christian Science. I was healed of the smoking habit.

A number of years ago, while I was walking on the street after a blizzard, a man came up to me and, pointing a revolver at me, demanded my money. I was rather astonished at first and must have let fear in, for he reached out with his free hand and, taking hold of the lapels of my coat, gave me a shake and again demanded my money. This only moved me to a realization of where my protection was. I realized that God had given me my life and no one could take it from me. I told that man of my relation to God and of his relation to Him. My thought must have cleared, for he let go of my coat, put the revolver in his pocket, and meekly asked me to help him. Before doing so I assured him that he could not take from me what God had given me; then I put my hand in my pocket and taking out money gave him some. He made no move to try to take any more from me than I offered. Then he walked away. On my return to my apartment my wife met me at the door and asked what had occurred. I had been out a little longer than usual, and feeling that I needed help she had been studying and praying. I was most grateful for this proof of God's loving care.

In a testimony of this kind it would be impossible for me to tell of all the benefits that I have received and am receiving through the study of Christian Science. I know I am a better citizen because of my daily study of it. The privilege of the study of the Lesson-Sermons in the Christian Science Quarterly is one for which all students of this Science should be most grateful. To prepare one's thought for the day by the study of the truth given in these Lessons must mean much. I am grateful for our literature, the church services, the lectures, and all the activities of the movement; also for membership in The Mother Church and for class instruction. I feel the world owes a debt of gratitude to Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, for the wonderful work she did to help her fellow man.—
