There are so many things for which I am grateful to Christian Science that I hardly know where to begin when publicly giving thanks. Although I have been a Christian Scientist all my life, and never a day has passed in which there has not been something for which to give thanks to God, two different occasions stand out especially.
Shortly after leaving college in 1928, while employed as a newspaper reporter, I was suddenly seized with fear when one day the sight of both my eyes failed. Friends directed me to an eye specialist who was reputed one of the best to be found in the state in which I was then living. I was advised that in order to go on with my work I must go to this specialist and be fitted with glasses. I listened to this argument and visited the doctor, but was soon shocked from the mesmerism which I had allowed to enter my consciousness, when he said that the only chance to save my eyes was a tedious operation which might save my eyes, and on the other hand might result in total blindness. I told the physician I wanted several days to think it over, and went home that night thoroughly frightened. I telegraphed to a Christian Science practitioner for help, and was able to carry on my work the next day. From then on rapid improvement was noticed, and in less than a week my eyes were healed.
The other occasion is of more recent date. Among the injuries sustained in a serious automobile accident was a badly cut and bruised right eye. A physician, called to set broken bones, commented that the ball of the eye was so badly bruised that he doubted if I could ever see with it again. This eye was healed by the work of a practitioner in less than ten days, and now there is no sign of disfigurement. The medical law had been that because of a fractured cheek bone on that side of my face the eye would be permanently disfigured.
