WITHOUT some degree of spiritual discernment and utilization of good, the human race, as a whole, would long since have become the unresisting prey of materiality. Many a one fails to attribute to Deity the good which he expresses, but the fact remains that "there is none good but one, that is, God."
Through discerning the perfection of the one spiritual creation, Christ Jesus freed the victims of disease, sin, and want, and overcame death for himself and others. He said, "If therefore thine eye be single, thy whole body shall be full of light," and, "Having eyes, see ye not?" As a true teacher he also warned his followers against the eye which was evil, and which made the whole body dark. In other words, he proclaimed the value to humanity of spiritual discernment.
Christian Science is carrying on this same healing ministry through the power of Spirit and spiritual sense, which beholds reality in place of materiality. Evil has no presence in the infinitude of good. On page 586 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" Mrs. Eddy defines "eyes" as "spiritual discernment,— not material but mental." The study of Science and Health quickens spiritual sense. Since Spirit is incapable of beholding anything material, perishable, or imperfect, the spiritual discernment of reality is the sure remedy for human suffering and imperfection. Spiritual sense alone releases thought from the depredations of materiality; and the fact must be faced that humanity's best-intentioned efforts to establish health, peace, and prosperity in human experience must ultimately be centered on the gain of spiritual discernment.
