Christian Science has helped me so many times and in so many ways that I am sure that without it I could never have come through as I have. I first started the study of this Science nineteen years ago, when I was traveling with a theatrical company. I was only seventeen and was alone for the first time. My sister had always been with me before; and I felt somewhat afraid, especially at night. A member of the company offered to lend me her copy of Science and Health by Mary Baker Eddy. I read it and became very much interested; the truths revealed therein appealed to me strongly, and I desired to know more about God and His perfect man. I was no longer afraid, for I learned then that I could never be alone because God is always present.
I attended the Wednesday evening testimony meetings and the Sunday services whenever I could, and felt a desire to be like the people I saw at these meetings. So I studied and applied Christian Science in my daily living, and it was always effective.
My first big demonstration was in 1919 at the time of the so-called Spanish influenza epidemic. I was very sick with this ailment, but refused all material remedies. My husband, for fear that I should die, and because I would accept no other help, called in a Christian Science practitioner, who stayed with me for over two hours and gave me a treatment. After she left I felt stronger and was able to sit up. The next morning I awoke with a song in my heart. I was healed.
