MAN'S UNITY WITH GOD

From the May 1941 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Without question all human troubles, limitations, and fears arise from a sense of separation from God, from the belief that man is mortal and material, having a mind of his own, being the arbiter of his own destiny, or else being subject to environment or material laws over which he can have little or no control. Yet Christ Jesus taught that man has no existence apart from God. He definitely explained to his disciples the nature of man's unity with God. He said. "I and my Father are one," and, "The Son can do nothing of himself, but what he seeth the Father do: for what things soever he doeth, these also doeth the Son likewise." Through his understanding of his unity with God he proved that the divine nature and perfection are expressed in man.

What a harbinger of good is this revelation to sick and sinning, weary and overburdened, fearful and poor humanity! Jesus healed the sick, redeemed the sinner, fed the hungry, and raised the dead, freeing those who sought him from the bondage of the false belief that man lives in a material body, apart from God. Jesus exemplified man's true being, and his words and works were recorded in the Scriptures for the benefit of all humanity. But it was not until a spiritually-minded New England woman in our age correctly interpreted the Scriptures and gave her discovery to the world that men were again enabled to prove man's unity with God and experience the healing and redemptive effects of that revelation. This was Mary Baker Eddy's contribution to the world—her discovery of Christian Science, which she elucidated in the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," and her other writings, thus setting forth the full revelation of the truth about God and man's relationship to Him.

In order to understand man's nature and unity with God it is necessary to learn the nature of God, and learn of what man's unity with Him consists. On page 465 of Science and Health Mrs. Eddy writes, "God is incorporeal, divine, supreme, infinite Mind, Spirit, Soul, Principle, Life. Truth, Love;" and she states that "the attributes of God are justice, mercy, wisdom, goodness, and so on." Do not these words signify that God is All, and that there is none beside Him? But what is man, since God is All? Can man have existence apart from God's infinitude? Truly not!
