There is an answer of encouragement and healing to the human cries of distress that seem to arise from so many parts of the world today. The answer is found in the teachings of Christian Science. One of the important rules in healing through this Science is given in the redemptive statement, "The counter fact relative to any disease is required to cure it." This statement is made by Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, on page 233 of her textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," a book in which are found the rules whereby mental and physical adjustments are accomplished. For carrying on this work of healing and adjusting inharmonious conditions, Christian Scientists are garnering a rich store of counterfacts by diligently studying the Bible and Mrs. Eddy's writings. They find that as they declare these facts understandingly and accept them as the sole truth about man, diseases are healed and wrongs are righted.
Through diligent and prayerful study of the Bible Mrs. Eddy found that God is ever-present, infinite Mind, and, being Mind, He is expressed in ideas. She saw that since man is the idea or expression of God, man cannot possibly be separated from Mind. Mind and idea are one, not two. No one should think of them as existing separately. Man exists because Mind exists. God is the only Mind and Life there is or can be. And man, as the idea or expression of Mind, cannot be susceptible to evil suggestions from another source, an opposite, so-called mortal mind. Since there can be nothing besides the infinitude of good, diseased and inharmonious beliefs do not exist in reality. How encouraging is the fact that fallacies of mortal mind can be destroyed by replacing the false concept with the counterfact that God, Mind, is All, and "there is none else"! There is no evil mind, and there is no matter. The real man reflects the Mind that is God.
What this understanding brings to humanity today is beyond evaluation. Are not many struggling under the assumption that man is a mortal, that evil with its fears and woes is real, and that men are unprotected from disease, accident, failure, aggression, war? Does not the world today accept the belief that evil is not only as real as good, but even more powerful? The counterfact, then, to the erroneous belief that man is susceptible to destructive suggestions, can be established by turning thought quickly and completely to God and accepting from Him alone true thoughts, divine truths; and thus a glorious freedom of spiritual harmony is realized. Jesus recognized no intelligence, activity, or existence separate from God, Mind. His spiritual understanding protected him from the evils of mortal thought and constituted his authority for refusing to accept as real or true, sin and disease in those who came to him for healing. Today this faultless standard of perfect man, when understood and maintained, heals sickness and sin. Because the mental state or mistaken opinion has changed, inharmony disappears. The veritable truths taught in Christian Science have been proved by thousands, and they have a message of salvation for all.
