THE HIGHER WAYS OF MIND AND MAN

From the September 1941 issue of The Christian Science Journal

In the fifty-fifth chapter of Isaiah are found these words: ''For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the Lord. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts."

It has come as a joyful and liberating discovery to many a student of Christian Science that this teaching of Scripture refers, not to man, but to a false mortal sense of man. For Christian Science clearly reveals that the ways of God are not different from those of man, as he really is, but are by reflection his ways. The thoughts of God are those that are natural for man. As God is, and where He is, so is His likeness, His manifestation. It is as if the eternal Father were declaring in the words of Christ Jesus' parable, "Son, thou art ever with me, and all that I have is thine." "God and man are not the same," writes Mary Baker Eddy, the beloved Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 336), "but in the order of divine Science, God and man coexist and are eternal." And she writes (Miscellaneous Writings, p. 183), "Whatever is possible to God, is possible to man as God's reflection."

It is a mistake often made, but a grievous mistake nevertheless, to relate this great truth—the truth of man's absolute likeness to God—to anything other than one's own present selfhood, and that of all men. In rightly appraising this truth, one is in the profoundest sense finding himself, and in so doing he sees that the majestic vision of Mind is, in reality, his vision, and its utterly searching and joyful intelligence his intelligence. And he sees that the same is true of all men.
