TRUE SUBSTANCE

From the September 1941 issue of The Christian Science Journal

In spite of the abundance in the material world today, multitudes in every nation are suffering from lack of the necessities of life, and are seemingly at a loss to know where to turn for supplies. This condition exists because there is a widespread misunderstanding of the nature of God and of His purpose for man.

On page 468 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy we find these words: "Substance is that which is eternal and incapable of discord and decay. Truth, Life, and Love are substance, as the Scriptures use this word in Hebrews: 'The substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.' Spirit, the synonym of Mind, Soul, or God, is the only real substance."

Christian Science has come to the world to show mankind the nature of true substance, to make the words and works of Christ Jesus practical in daily living. Regarded in the new light which Christian Science throws on it, substance is something vastly different from that which mankind believes it to be; in fact, it is the very opposite. What the world calls substance is shadow, because it is subject to discord and decay.
