Each day finds me increasingly grateful for the moment, more than twenty years ago, when Christian Science first came to my attention. I was not at that time in need of any physical healing, but felt a vague need for more spiritual living, which my years of membership in an orthodox church did not seem to satisfy. I purchased a copy of the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, and became so absorbed in it that I knew it was indeed the truth which I had been waiting for.
I had been reading but a few days when I was able to make a simple demonstration for myself which to some might seem too trivial to be worth mentioning. But to me it was a joyous, convincing proof of what I had been reading. I was sitting at my desk one day writing letters when I was overtaken with an attack of hiccoughs. My first impulse was to lay my pen down and continue my writing later. But instantly I knew that man need not for a moment be subject to error, and I was immediately free.
Since then I have witnessed healings of acute appendicitis, earache, headache, chronic tonsillitis, neuralgia, carbuncle, and numerous other ills. Years ago I had an instantaneous healing of nervous indigestion. I was alone in the house at the time and preparing to retire for the night when I suddenly became so ill and weak that I felt I could not even go downstairs to telephone to a practitioner for help. Knowing that I must make the demonstration for myself, I prayed for the angel thought which would meet the trouble. As a light penetrating the darkness came the passage from the twenty-third Psalm, "I will fear no evil: for thou art with me." With this thought came release, and I was soon sleeping peacefully.
