Today, when so many of mankind's fondest hopes have been upset, when the human economy has been so widely disturbed, and many people have to do work they never imagined they would ever have to do, it is well for those who seek peace, refreshment, and their true individuality, to consider what is the nature of the real man, where is his dwelling place, and what governs him.
If one turns to the first chapter of Genesis, it is learned that God made man in His image and likeness, and that all creation in its completeness was very good. In the second chapter of that book, however, we read of man as created of matter and involved in a mist. In Christian Science, thanks to the inspired thought and spiritual vision of Mary Baker Eddy, we learn that if we would know the fact about man, we must turn to the first and genuine account of creation, since the second chapter of Genesis and many of the following chapters do not deal with the real man, but with the material counterfeit; and we should no more accept this account as true of God's man than we should accept as genuine a spurious bank note, were we aware of its false nature.
Because Spirit is the one creator, it follows that the real creation is spiritual, for it is a well-known rule that like invariably produces like. On this basis we can know and authoritatively declare that the mortal, material sense of man is not man, for man reflects God; therefore he is not material but is God's spiritual idea. That God's man is no hypothetical, intangible being we prove when we look for the true selfhood of our friend, neighbor, business acquaintance, and relative, discarding preconceived notions about man as material, and discerning all things spiritually.
