THE MORE ABUNDANT LIFE

From the March 1943 issue of The Christian Science Journal

From the beginning of history men have striven to attain their highest concept of a more abundant life. Beholding the present world debacle and seeing the futility of their attempt to realize security and satisfaction in material things or ways, many are now searching for such values as will confidently lead to a more stable sense of abundance, security, and peace. To be permanent these values must be of a spiritual nature. Such values point to that spiritual haven wherein God is found to be the source of confidence, security, and peace.

The Bible declares God, whom the Apostle John reveals as love, to be the creator and maintainer of all good, and it contains the promise of abundant blessings to all who will learn and keep God's law as given to Moses in the Ten Commandments. That which is required of men is made plain in Jesus' summary of these Commandments, "Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind," and, "Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself." Jesus said, "I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly." He proved that in the measure one understands his at-one-ment with God he can progressively experience abundance of good in this human life and throughout eternity. The gaining of such understanding admits of no rebellion or procrastination, but rather calls forth alert, willing obedience in joyous expectation of a fulfillment of God's promised blessing.

To the young man who asked, "What good thing shall I do, that I may have eternal life?" Jesus pointedly replied, "If thou wilt be perfect, go and sell that thou hast, . . . and come and follow me." Unwilling to part with his human sense of abundance in order to gain certainty of the spiritual riches of eternal life, the young man sorrowfully turned away. This withholding postponed his perception of and his worthiness to receive the blessing of true abundance.
